Today we catch up with ‘Eco Lexi’ who is making a huge impact by challenging the fast fashion industry, busily creating initiatives that plant trees, making “To-Do” lists and pondering the existence of extra terrestrial life forms!
Your full name?
How old are you?
What is your current pageant title?
Miss Eco United Kingdom Finalist 2021.
What is your favourite thing about pageantry so far?
The people you meet along the way. I have gained so many wonderful friends from pageants that I would never have met and the way pageants bring people together from all over the country or even the world is incredible! Having such strong and beautiful pageant sisters to support is a huge part of pageantry to me.
Describe your personality in its full glory.
My personality is ever changing and evolving as I grow up and learn more about the world. I am hard-working and determined to achieve my goals no matter what obstacles I have to overcome. I pride myself on being easy-going and friendly to everyone I meet as I never want to be the reason that someone feels upset or excluded. I believe in Karma so being a polite, kind and generous person is an important part of who I am!
What do you see as the important skills you can learn from pageantry?
Strength! Pageants have taught me how powerful we as women are and so many queens have created and achieved amazing things.
Confidence! Being on stage and having such incredible support from the directors, sponsors, contestants and judges gives you an amazing confidence boost and truly makes you feel empowered.
What qualities do you think a competitor needs to win a crown?
The winner should share the same qualities and goals as the system she's competing in and should be a great role model to the younger generations. The queen that's crowded should be graceful and be professional in how they present themselves as they are representing their area or even country. To me a crowned queen must be kind and want nothing more than for her pageant sisters to excel too!
How would you explain Beauty Pageants to someone who has never experienced one?
Pageants are an opportunity for competitors to create lifelong friendships around the world, raise millions of funds for charity and boost confidence. It's not just a beauty pageant it's so much more! From campaigning and being involved in projects to getting out in the community, pageants help you to become your best self. Prepare to catch the pageant bug!
What is the most important thing you would do with your dream title?
If I were to win Miss Eco UK I would use the title to try and work with my local council to create new environmental initiatives, from there I would try to make those initiatives national and in some cases even try to go global! Fighting for our planet is a huge part of my life so being able to represent the UK as Miss Eco really would be a dream!
I want nothing more than to inspire others to be more ecological and live a sustainable life.
What is the most interesting thing the judges would need to know about you?
I own my own eco company! I created skvngr back in 2019 with the aim to help reduce textile waste and in turn help to save our planet. I sell preloved and upcycled clothing and virtual medals that are connected to different incentives like; tree planting and pulling trash from the oceans. Watching my company grow and educating people on ways to be sustainable is one of my favourite things to do so much so that I have a blog dedicated to all things eco!
What does your system stand for and why is this important to you?
The Miss Eco UK pageant was founded on three main values; courage, beauty and sustainability and the main aim of Miss Eco International is to 'help save our planet'. As someone who is big into sustainability it is important to me to be a part of the system! The amazing platform that this title brings could help me raise much needed awareness for our planet and help to change the world.
Do you have a platform? Tell us about it.
My platform is based around slow fashion and shopping organically sourced, thrifting and upcycling. Fast fashion is one of the biggest contributors to pollution in the world so by being more mindful with our choices we can help to reduce that awful statistic!
I was lucky enough to launch my own company SKVNGR at the end of 2019 and have just launched the 'Say No To New Project' which celebrates the slow fashion movement!
I launched the #teesfortreeproject at the end of 2020 to support global tree plantation projects and in June 2021 added virtual medals to the skvngr website that are supporting more tree plantation and ocean conservation projects, the plan is to add even more medals that support other incredible causes!
Would you like to represent the UK at an international pageant and why?
Absolutely! I would love nothing more than to represent the United Kingdom at Miss Eco International. It would be an absolute honour to represent a huge part of my life (sustainable living) on an international stage and have a real voice for change.
Why do you want to enter a Beauty Pageant?
I chose to enter the Miss Eco pageant because when I came across it online I truly felt like the system was made for me! Pairing the elegance and beauty of pageants with such an important topic that I am passionate about is like a dream come true and something I knew I had to be a part of.
Tell us about any community and charity work you have done. Why did you choose the projects or charities you supported?
I actually launched the slow fashion company @skvngruk in 2019 which specialises in preloved and upcycled clothing with the aim to reduce the amount of textile waste ending up in landfill each year.
During my time as a finalist I have launched the #teesfortreesproject collection (on skvngr) where each tee sold, plants one tree. Each shirt has been sustainably upcycled with tie-dye being the current trend!
I have also just launched the @saynotonewproject which encourages people to boycott buying non sustainable clothes each month and helps teach people about the dangers of fast fashion.
I was then delighted to be made an Engagement Manager for @hashtagsustainablesundays which I love and get to engage so much with the eco community!
I recently collaborated with 4Ocean in a global ocean clean-up in honor of 'world ocean day' (photos will be released soon)!
This June, I launched two virtual medals on skvngr which not only help you but also the environment! There is a 5K which plants five trees and a 10K that pulls a pound of trash from the ocean. I already have ideas for new medals that are attached to different environmental causes!
I always look to get involved in eco, sustainable and vegan campaigns and so far have been a part of; meatless march mondays, one swap for earth, on wednesdays we wear green, who made my clothes, #picktocleanup, #onechangefortheocean and #groundzero
What does it mean to you to be a person of substance?
To me being a person of substance means being rich in life and adding value to the world we live in by accomplishing things that make you happy! Paying attention to the details, doing research to better yourself and being present with people are all traits for a person of substance.
What makes a person inspirational to you?
For someone to be inspirational they need to love what they do and show great enthusiasm and passion for life! I am inspired by people that promote personal growth and setting goals for the future. Positive people that celebrate success and are kind.
What qualities/characteristics should a Queen have?
As I've mentioned a queen should be graceful and professional in how they present themselves and their pageant. A queen is kind and wants to see her fellow pageant sisters excel, making her the first to help and offer guidance to the new generation!
Where is your happy place?
Anywhere warm with a beautiful view like on a beach looking out towards the sea relaxing with a good book and an errand free afternoon! That said, my happy place can be anywhere as long as I am surrounded by my friends or loved ones. It's never normally where I am, it's who I am with.
When did you last lie?
I feel like I tell little lies to myself every night before I fall asleep about all the things I'm going to complete the next day but it rarely ever comes to fruition! I have however started writing 'to do' lists every evening for the next day and they are an incredible help!
What book do you recommend most to people?
Not just a book but a series of books, I was so excited to receive the full set of the 'Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket' as a gift and they are so so good! Sometimes I find it hard to find a series that is interesting the entire way through but this one has not disappointed me yet. The story is so twisted yet beautiful that it makes for great reading!
I'm only up to book 6 of 13 so still have quite a way to go but I definitely recommend giving them a read if you can.
What's the one thing you want to know before you die?
Are we alone in the galaxy? I'm so intrigued to find out and have it confirmed if there really are aliens out there or perhaps even living among us! Imagine if we actually got to witness aliens landing on our planet or even manage to contact them, it would be a huge step for mankind. I hope I get to find out the answer before I pass on.
